Sostenuto
The lovers wake to spill into each other.
They have betrayed their families
and fled the country together, hands
melted into a single fist. The lovers
have written their final letter
and are sailing the abyss.
They leapt onto the moving train
that takes them where they will belong.
They inch their bed closer and closer
to the morning’s song. The lovers
exchange their vows at the altar
of ever after. They wear each other
to work and social gatherings.
They complain when one is absent
from the other’s dream. The lovers
turn and pull away from each other.
Not yet, you hear them whisper.
Time can wait a moment longer.
